Traffic Control Supervisor Requirements

To receive your Traffic Control Supervisor certification card, the required documents listed below must be submitted before a certification card can be issued:

  1. A current state approved flagger card. The following states are approved: Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.

  2. Two (2) signed letters* (or one (1) letter with two (2) signatures) verifying 2,000 hours of work in traffic control related tasks. These can be achieved over multiple years. Letters can be submitted from any of the following who can verify the knowledge and experience of the Traffic Control Supervisor candidate:

    • Employers (past and/or present)
    • Subcontractors
    • DOT Inspectors
    • Other Traffic Control Supervisors

    *Note: Any of the provided letters may be submitted to the State upon request.

    Experience needs to include work in two (2) of the following areas:

    • Experience as a construction inspector, including inspection of traffic control
    • Traffic control work on survey crew
    • Designing and review traffic control plans
    • Other specific traffic control experience (set-up and take-down)
    • Some flagging experience

    These letters should include:

    • Brief history of individuals working experience
    • Project (s) they have worked on
    • Approximate number of cumulative hours worked as a Flagger/Work Zone Worker

    Letter Format:

    • Must be typed and on letterhead. (If letterhead is not available a company business card will be acceptable).
    • Must provide contact information for the authors
  3. Individuals must also complete the training and pass the exam with a score of 80% or better.

  4. Payment must be received.
